Chris Preble is the current head coach for the Fresno State Bulldogs Bowling Program. Coach Preble took over the head coaching position from Coach Carlson in 2007 shortly before Coach Carlson's passing in January of 2008. Preble had been assisting with the program since the 2002-2003 season.
Coach Preble's bowling life began in 1978 at Sunnyside Bowl in Fresno. In his second year of league bowling a gentleman named Robbie Tanaka took over as Sunnyside's Junior Director. Robbie's impact on Coach Preble began then and continues to this day. Preble says, "Without Robbie's coaching and guidance, none of the experiences I've had within this game would have happened."
After his youth bowling years came to an end, he attended Fresno State University and met Glenn Carlson, the founder of the Fresno State Bowling Program. As Robbie had directly influenced his youth bowling, Coach Carlson set his adult bowling life in line. While competing for Fresno State from 1985-89, Preble claimed three "West Coast Collegiate Masters Titles" However, he's most proud of being on the first men’s team from Fresno State to qualify for the Intercollegiate National Championships in 1988 in Denver, Colorado.
Following college, Preble competed full-time on the PBA West Regional from 1993-1999, where he was recognized as the 1993 PBA Western Region Rookie of the Year and claimed two Regional Titles. He is still a PBA member today. In 2003, he was welcomed into the Central California USBC's Hall of Fame.
Preble's coaching career began in 2002 when Coach Carlson found himself with an abundance of talented players on both the Men's and Women's teams and asked Preble if he would be able to assist. Preble enthusiastically agreed and has been coaching ever since. The early years of coaching were intense as the talent base saw high rankings and near misses at the National Championships. It was in 2011 that the Bulldogs finally claimed their first Intercollegiate Team Championship defeating the Webber International Warriors on national television. In recent years, the program hasn't been ranked as high but Preble still finds great satisfaction in teaching the game to individuals who are willing to learn and show their love for it. With that being said, he has plans in place to regain the competitive position the program once commanded. GO BULLDOGS!
Chris is a family man, and he loves to spend time with his wife, Dana Preble (Fresno State Bowling Alumni), and travel to see his two daughters. Both Audree and Averee both graduated from college and living out their lives.
