Our Founder

Glenn Carlson

(12.11.1936 - 01.27.2008)

During the inception of the Fresno State bowling program in 1969, Glenn Carlson emerged as a guiding force, shaping the destiny of both the women's and men's teams. Under his tutelage, the women's team soared to an impressive 12 national championship appearances, while the men's team notched up six appearances of their own. Beyond the lanes, Coach Carlson dedicated 33 years of his life to the University Student Union, now known by a different name, infusing his passion for the sport into every aspect of collegiate life.

A true luminary of the sport, Coach Carlson didn't confine his talents solely to the collegiate arena. He also ventured onto the PBA tour, showcasing his skills on the grand stage with three TV show appearances. Yet, it was evident to all who encountered him that his heart resided in the realm of collegiate bowling. Assuming the role of National Program Director of Intercollegiate Bowling, he tirelessly championed the growth of the sport, aiming to expand its reach and impact across the nation.

Throughout his illustrious career, Coach Carlson's focus remained unwaveringly fixed on his students and athletes, tirelessly striving to provide them with opportunities for growth and development. His legacy extends far beyond the lanes, with 25 All-Americans standing as a testament to his coaching prowess. In recognition of his efforts, he was honored with the 2006 Kern Helmer Horizon Award, a testament to his unwavering dedication to expanding opportunities for youth bowlers.

Upon his passing in 2008, Coach Carlson left an indelible mark on the sport, forever etching his name in the annals of collegiate bowling history. Some would argue that he rightfully belongs on the Mount Rushmore of College Bowling, his influence and legacy serving as a beacon for generations to come. Following in his esteemed footsteps, the mantle of leadership was passed to one of Coach Carlson's own, Chris Preble, a former player whose own journey is a testament to the enduring impact of Coach Carlson's mentorship.

Fresno State Student Union

Nestled within the union are a couple of delightful food spots and cozy study areas for students. But what truly sets the place apart is its hidden gem on the bottom floor—a 12-lane bowling center, serving as both our team's practice arena and the venue for our annual collegiate tournament. This bowling haven has stood since the days of our revered founder, Glenn Carlson, who first graced these halls in the 1970s. Over the years, it has been meticulously overseen by the dedicated stewardship of Patricia Thomason, a steadfast supporter of our program, who has since retired. Now, the reins have been passed to the capable hands of acting manager, Jason Tehee, a seasoned organizer of tournaments throughout the Central Valley.

Amidst the challenges posed by COVID, the union shuttered its doors to the public on weekends this past year, disrupting our usual rhythm. However, as we stride into the Summer of 2023, optimism abounds as the union prepares to swing its doors open on Saturdays once more, signaling a return to normalcy and a renewed commitment to progress.
